Do You Like Nautical Fiction?

I have been reading nautical fiction (and non-fiction) since a librarian led me to C.S. Forester's Hornblower books in 1952. I have a large collection of most of the great fiction writers in this genre, including O'Brian, Pope, Kent, Maryatt, Lambden, Melville, and others. No, it's not for everybody, but there must be thousands of readers who like these kinds of stories. I love writing about the sea and the courageous men who risk their lives battling the elements and their country's enemies. There will never be another historic period as exciting as the age of sail, but there will always be more stories to tell!

About Me

J. L. Mercer
After a childhood in Indiana, growing up in Florida, and living in Southern California for several years, I moved to Washington. I worked for Douglas Aircraft and Boeing for 35 years as a design drafter, engineer, and manager. Since retiring in 1999, I have been an author, publishing three books and writing short stories, poetry, non-fiction, and fiction. I've won several writing contests in several categories. I am currently in a novel writers' group and also a member of Whidbey Island Writers Association. I hold a BFA degree in Industrial Design from University of Washington. I served as an aircrewman on a P2V Neptune in the USN as a radio operator and as an Aviation Electrician. I live with my wife Carolyn in a house that we designed and built on Whidbey Island. We have a German Shepherd (our 8th) named Charly (Reba's Sweet Charlotte). We have three married daughters and five grandchildren.

My Books

I have written many technical documents, including Aircraft Seating Comfort, A Power Plant for the South Pole, SPEEA's Portable Dyalisis Unit, and others. I published a small history booklet about our community, One Hundred Years at Greenbank. In 2003, I was editor, publisher, and contributor of a humor anthology, An Island Full of Laughter. I do most of my own graphics, layout, and artwork.

In 2008 I published my first novel, A Choice of Freedom, that relates how young William Pope becomes a sailor during the American Revolutionary War. He is picked up after being shipwrecked and travels to the South Atlantic on Felicity, a whaling ship. He visits several ports, sees the African slave trade, makes many friends, and has an enemy who tries to kill him.

The second book in the series, The Rattler Strikes, was published late in 2009. This book tells of William Pope and his friends on the privateer Rattler and their battles and adventures in the British Isles, Europe, and Morocco. This book was followed in 2010 with the third book, Lieutenant Pope's Revenge. The fourth book in the series should be available by the end of summer, 2011. It's title is: The Topsail Schooner.

I am currently working on eight other projects: four novels on different subjects and in different genres, an anthology of short stories, a collection of poetry, a three act play, and a memoir of my boyhood in Indiana in the '40s and '50s. I also have more projects planned. It keeps me off the streets!
